Chicago-made cop drama snares Jennifer Beals, Jason Clarke, 'FNL' actor

Rockford native Shawn Ryan's next TV project, the police drama "Ridealong," is set to begin production in Chicago April 6, and the cast for the Fox pilot is taking shape.

"Ridealong" cast members include:

  • UPDATE April 10: Delroy Lindo has been added as Alderman Gibbons.
  • Chicago native Jennifer Beals as Teresa, "a young, female chief of police" who is "attempting to navigate Chicago politics," Ryan said in a 2009 story about the project.
  • "Brotherhood" star Jason Clarke has a major role as a cop named Jarek, a.k.a. "the Polish cowboy"
  • "Friday Night Lights'" Matt Lauria plays a character named Caleb
  • Todd Williams ("In Plain Sight") as Isaac
  • Billy Lush as Liam (Lush played Cpl. Trombley in "Generation Kill" and also appeared in "The Black Donnellys")
  • Devin Kelley as Vonda

Ryan's hope is that if Fox orders a full series, "Ridealong" will be filmed entirely in Chicago.

Last fall, Ryan said the show is "mostly about cops, but we will deal with how cops are affected/stymied/supported by local political elements."

The show will be "filmed primarily on the streets with our cops' vehicles serving as their offices. It will be part cop procedural, part buddy comedy, part political thriller, part undercover drama... or it will just be a huge mess," Ryan said. "But I'm going to try to make it good."

Ryan is also executive producer of "Lie to Me," which returns on Fox June 7 (and Beals has been a recurring character on that show). He's also an executive producer of the new FX show "Terriers," which is also set to arrive this summer. There's a description and photo from "Terriers" here.

John Larroquette, Keith David also cast in pilots

Meanwhile, Keith David has landed a lead opposite David Lyons on the NBC drama pilot "The Cape."

"Ride-Along" revolves around on a rogue cowboy cop (Clarke) and Chicago's first female police chief (Beals) who vow to clean up the streets. "The L Word" alumna Beals recently recurred on another Fox/20th TV drama, "Lie to Me." Her casting on "Ride-Along" comes a week after she signed with Paradigm. She also is with Greenlight Management.

A legal thriller based on Scott Turow's book, "Guilty" chronicles the embezzlement, bookmaking, offshore banking and the politics of a high-powered law firm. Its centers on Mack (Isaacs), a cop-turned-attorney at the firm.

Larroquette, repped by ICM and Brillstein Entertainment, will play the patrician managing partner of the firm who recruited him. "Guilty" marks Larroquette's return to the legal-drama beat following his recent regular role on "Boston Legal," where he also played a senior partner at a top law firm. He also won an Emmy for his guest role on "The Practice" and four Emmys for playing an ADA on the sitcom "Night Court."

"Cape" centers on Vince (Lyons), a cop framed for murder who becomes a masked hero, the Cape, to clear his name. David, repped by Stone Manners Salners and Silvermine, will play a rogue criminal showman who becomes Vince's mentor. He will appears in "Death at a Funeral."

Jennifer Beals feliz por volver a Chicago para grabar el piloto "Ride along"

http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2010/04/ridealong-jennifer-beals.html
Jennifer Beals happy to be home for Chicago's pilot season

Jennifer Beals, who has been shooting the Fox TV pilot "Ride-Along" in Chicago this month, is very glad to be back.

Jbeals "It's my hometown and it's beautiful and my mom's here," Beals said Monday on a break between scenes being shot at Gibson's Steakhouse on Rush Street. "The first couple of days I probably drove the driver crazy, swooning over the architecture."

Beals plays Teresa, a Chicago police official trying to root out corruption in the city and Jason Clarke ("Brotherhood") plays Jarek, her former partner and a detective "with a good sense of humor who likes to kick down doors," according to Clarke.

Teresa is no shrinking violet either.

"It's not something you see very often, on television or in film -- a strong female character who's intelligent, who also has some vulnerability," Beals said of her "Ride-Along" role. "I think being on 'The L Word' for six years, I got really spoiled, taking [the importance of the female characters] completely for granted."

Clarke has been attempting to master the accent of his character, who goes through partners like Illinois goes through governors. For the proper Chicago pronunciations, he's been consulting a dialogue coach and the show's Chicago Police Department consultant, Det. John L. Folino Jr.

"And the Teamsters," Clarke added. He's been trying to steer clear of all the tempting fried foods, however. "I'm sticking to the lettuce. Like a rabbit," he said with a laugh.

In addition to "Ride-Along," which also stars Delroy Lindo, Matt Lauria, Todd Williams, Billy Lush, Devin Kelly and Manny Montana, other TV pilots being filmed here in April include "The Line" and "Pleading Guilty," though only "Ride-Along" will be based in Chicago full-time if it gets picked up.

Fun trivia fact: Clarke starred in "Brotherhood" with Jason Isaacs, the star of "Pleading Guilty," which is based on a novel by Scott Turow and executive produced by "Bones" creator Hart Hanson. All of which is creating a familial atmosphere at a certain Chicago hotel, where many from the pilot contingents are staying.

"I see more industry people in the lobby of our hotel than I do in L.A.," joked "Ride-Along" creator and Rockford native Shawn Ryan.

(A couple of notes: I'll have more coverage of these shows if they get picked up. And the image above is from "Lie to Me," on which Beals has had a recurring role.)

New TV Show Films in Chicago, Creating Jobs and Generating Revenue

Updated: Thursday, 16 Sep 2010, 1:21 PM CDT
Published : Thursday, 16 Sep 2010, 1:16 PM CDT

FOX Chicago News

Chicago - Governor Pat Quinn was in Cicero Thursday to tout jobs created by a new TV series filming in Illinois. The show, Ride-Along, will be airing on Fox later in the season, sometime after the Super Bowl.

You may see it on TV, but Governor Quinn said you might not see the millions of dollars and hundreds of jobs the show created.

Chicago native Jennifer Beals stars in the police drama, which follows Chicago police detectives on the street.

The filming is expected to generate $25 million in revenue and create over 400 jobs in Illinois.

“We have a great new film tax credit that’s working, a 30 percent tax credit, and all the other expenditures. And we want to encourage all the other folks that want to make TV shows and movies to come right here to Illinois,” Quinn said.

The cast and crew joined Quinn for the press conference, and they were shooting the fifth episode of the series.

The show was created by Shawn Ryan, a Rockford native, who also worked on The Shield and The Unit.

Last year, film and television productions in Illinois generated more than $104 million in economic activity, according to the governor’s office.

This summer, the blockbuster Transformers series filmed its third movie in Chicago, bringing delight to celeb-seekers and those enjoying the pyrotechnics, and causing several major traffic disruptions.

EXCLUSIVE: Fox's 'Ride-Along' Has 'Sons of Anarchy,' 'Mad Men' Connections
by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 16th 2010

Print this page|EmailShare on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on DiggShare on Lifestream

On a Thursday visit to the Chicago set of 'Ride-Along,' which premieres at mid-season on Fox, I was able to pick up a few bits of news.

Not only is a 'Sons of Anarchy' actor guesting on the new Shawn Ryan show, there's also a 'Mad Men' connection.

Adam Arkin (who played Ethan Zobelle on 'Sons of Anarchy') was on the 'Ride-Along' set directing the fifth episode of the Fox drama, and the actor/director said he will also play a law-enforcement role in the series.

"I play the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Illinois" in the fourth episode of 'Ride-Along,' Arkin said. He added that "there's talk" of the character returning for additional appearances on the show, which was created by 'Shield' and 'Terriers' executive producer Ryan, but nothing is set in stone yet.

'Ride-Along,' which is entirely filmed in Chicago, stars Jennifer Beals as a chief of police and Jason Clarke as a detective; they're old friends who team up to battle corruption in the city. I've seen the pilot and it's quite good, but my positive thoughts about the show shot up a few notches when I met Lesli Linka Glatter on the set, which Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn visited Thursday to celebrate the show's investment in the state.

Glatter, who is both an executive producer and director for 'Ride-Along,' has helmed many wonderful hours of television -- 'House,' 'The West Wing' and 'Freaks & Geeks' are among her many credits -- but she's also directed some of the best-ever 'Mad Men' episodes.

Among her notable 'Mad Men' episodes, she directed Season 1's '5G' and Season 4's 'The Chrysanthemum and the Sword' (thank her for that great shot of Peggy on the scooter). But she completely knocked it out of the park with Season 3's 'Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency. There were many notable scenes in that great episodes, but that one scene will live forever in the hearts and minds of TV fans. She was nominated for an Emmy for that episode, and I made sure to tell her I wish she had won.

Glatter (who's pictured at right with Shawn Ryan) mentioned she was supposed to direct one more 'Mad Men' this season but had to drop out when the 'Ride-Along' job came along. She has moved to Chicago until December, when production on Season 1 wraps up, and she'll be directing two episodes of the drama this season.

"I was sad about not doing the second 'Mad Men' episode," Glatter said, but she couldn't pass up the job on 'Ride-Along.' "What I love about the show is that we're using Chicago as a character. There's amazing architecture everywhere you turn. And it's about a shifting moral compass, and how do you find your true north, who you really are, in that environment?"

Also on the 'Ride-Along' staff is executive producer Tim Minear, who worked with Ryan and Ted Griffin on 'Terriers' and has also had a hand in most of Joss Whedon's shows.

Caleb Evers (Matt Lauria) and Chicago Police Supt. Teresa Colvin (Jennifer Beals) survey a crime scene at Miller's Pub in the new Fox series "Ride-along."
(Fox)

'Ride-along' creator, cast case life on street with cops

October 24, 2010
BY MIKE THOMAS mthomas@suntimes.com

If you passed by Miller's Pub on South Wabash a few weeks ago and were startled that a major crime might have gone down, blame your needlessly quickened heartbeat on television guru Shawn Ryan.

The Rockford native's upcoming cop drama, Fox's "Ride-along," was taping its sixth episode (of 13, pilot included) in and around the venerable Loop establishment. An ambulance and squad cars were parked outside. Yellow crime scene tape kept spectators at bay. Media folks clamored for interviews.

And, perhaps most tellingly, 21 boys in blue, hired as extras but looking no less official than they do on their everyday beats, were scattered about the set.

A stickler for realism, as he was in crafting his critically acclaimed FX series "The Shield" (also a cop drama, but based in Los Angeles), Ryan relies heavily on the personal and professional experiences of Chicago's finest -- not to mention their authenticity-boosting physical presence -- to imbue his fictional storylines with a strong sense of credibility.

So as to gain an even greater understanding of the town, its people and its law enforcement culture, Ryan and his principal cast members were squired by Chicago police detectives to some dangerously crime-infested locales. But the 44-year-old Ryan, who even was allowed to observe a murder scene (post-murder), is willing to witness only so much in the name of research.

"I don't have a huge desire to see tragedy," he says by phone from L.A., where Ryan also executive produces the fledgling FX dramedy "Terriers." "But I'm interested in seeing enough of it to be able to portray it so that we can have something that doesn't feel like complete B.S."

Inside Miller's, whose walls are adorned with lighted oil paintings and framed glossies of famous folks (including a cheesily mustachioed Dennis Farina of Chicago-shot "Crime Story" fame), fake tragedy had struck. Actors playing bloodied bodies, gunned down by thugs in ski masks, were slumped over a half-eaten entree and sprawled on the floor. Small yellow evidence markers dotted the dining area.

The expansive two-level room, with its high ceiling and brass chandeliers and sunlight-illumined stained glass, buzzed with actors, extras and crew members in various states of work and rest. Expensive equipment -- cameras, lights, an audio monitoring station -- was everywhere. Director Michael Offer spearheaded take after take.

"Good work, everyone," Offer, a decisive Australian with disheveled hair, proclaimed at one point. "Nice work. It's going good."

Production had begun at 6 a.m. and would continue, here and on the front steps of the nearby Chicago Cultural Center, for several more hours.

Fresh from an oft-repeated scene beneath ever-rumbling L trains, star Jason Clarke ("Public Enemies," Showtime's "Brotherhood") sat in a small booth and recalled his late-night adventures on our mean streets. His character's passable Chicago accent was dropped in favor of Clarke's own Australian one. (A Northwestern University dialect coach helps facilitate his transition from Down Under to Daleyville.)

"I've seen more than any time I've ever played a policeman," said Clarke, aka hard-driving maverick detective Jarek Wysocki. "It's almost like extreme sports. It's like going shark diving or jumping off a mountain or something. I've really gone in and had an opportunity to see stuff I think only a few of the dudes around here would get to see. And that's been an extraordinary experience."

During one especially intense outing, a gunshot victim died in close proximity to Clarke and his onscreen partner Matt Lauria (eager greenhorn detective Caleb Evers). "At a certain point," Ryan says, "it was so crazy I think [the actors] had to be dropped off back at their hotel, because there was real [police] work that had to be done."

Standing at the back of Miller's on a short break, Lauria talked of going under the bridges, under the L trains and to "the poorest of poor neighborhoods, from projects to the Loop to Millennium Park. We've seen everything."

And, he said, the prep work has proved immensely helpful from an artistic standpoint -- much more so than filming on a soundstage out West.

"It's a gift, man. It works on you. I'd say the best analogy would be if you were shooting a scene in a swamp. If you're actually on location, wading your way through a swamp or through a river or whatever, that's going to inform the decisions you make, the behavior, the point of view that you have. And it automatically is going to band you together with the people that you're working with. You're going to be much more reliant on them. And I think that being dropped into this really unique and incredible city and getting exposure to the different neighborhoods ... really stokes you emotionally and psychologically with your character. And I also think that it prepares you with an authenticity that is harder to really muster elsewhere."

Native Chicagoan Jennifer Beals is tough-and-tender police superintendent Teresa Colvin -- the youngest, fictionally speaking, in departmental history.

Born and partly brought up on the South Side at 82nd and Indiana, Beals eventually migrated north and graduated from the elite Francis W. Parker School in Lincoln Park. Her extended residency in Chicago -- where her mother continues to reside and where she long ago landed her first big-screen role in the 1980 film "My Bodyguard" -- has brought with it a flood of flashbacks.

"Every time I round a corner, there's 5 million memories," she says by phone not long after wrapping for the day. "The whole city is like my private madeleine," she adds, casually referencing the mind-blowing tea cake from French novelist Marcel Proust's classic Remembrance of Things Past. (She's a Yale grad, you know.)

Beals' former South Side stomping grounds, however, sparked no such Proustian revelry. Chicago homicide detective and "Ride-along's" technical advisor, John Folino Jr., she says, "wouldn't take me there."

"I think he was a little concerned about it. Because I said I wanted to go down to the 'Wild Hundreds' [portions of Far South Side streets], too, and make a pit stop at the old house. And he didn't think that was a great idea." She laughs. "Kevlar vest or no Kevlar vest."

Beals still got an eyeful of urban dysfunction.

"There's such a huge disrespect for the police department based in large part on the behavior of a very small minority," she says. "It was really shocking to see how disrespectful people were. And what was also distressful was to see how people were not forthcoming with information. ... I'd also see kids at midnight, 6-year-old kids, double-dutching in the street when they should be at home asleep. And they're half a block away from all the drug dealers who are doing their business on the street. What kids are subjected to makes it very clear how the cycle begins and ends."

Ryan, though, is no documentarian. All of this reality steeping serves only one purpose: to enrich his scripts and characters. Ultimately, ratings-grabbing entertainment value trumps absolute truth. And Ryan needs no reminding that "Ride-along," which is scheduled to premiere early next year, had better ooze entertainment value -- or else. That's what he gets for setting the bar so high.

"'The Shield' was a pretty magical show and had a lot of critical success, and I'm just trying not to be handcuffed by that," he says. "One reason why that show worked is there were absolutely no expectations for it and we were able to do what we did outside the spotlight, at least for the first year, and were able to take some chances. And I'm just trying to remember what that's like, to not worry about failure."

Tim Minear teases 'The Chicago Code'
Thursday, December 30 2010, 15:00 GMT
By Morgan Jeffery, TV Reporter

Tim Minear has promised that upcoming Fox drama The Chicago Code will be different to other cop shows.

The producer told Assignment X that the city of Chicago is "absolutely a character" in the series.

"It's more than just a cop show, because it's really about Chicago," he explained. "It's about municipal corruption [and] it's about the specific character of the city and how things get done there."

He continued: "It's about the first female police superintendent of the city and... her old partner, who is still a detective on the street, and they team up [to] track down this... larger corruption in the system. So it's definitely more than just, here's a dead body, here's a case."

Minear also explaining the reasoning behind changing the show's name from the original title, Ridealong.

"Ridealong is a great title, but it doesn't maybe have the specificity of The Chicago Code," he said. "[The new title] may not be as poetic as [the old one, and] it may be a little more unsubtle and on the nose, but I think... your title needs to be part of your marketing. It needs to say something to the audience to break through the noise of everything else that's out there."

The Chicago Code will premiere on February 7 on Fox.
